Inside Afghanistan’s online and underground schools

The event will be held on Monday 15th December at 2 pm (Paris time, GMT+3). It will be in English and reserved for our subscribers.

Online learning has become a critical lifeline and form of resistance in Afghanistan, where women’s rights have been systematically destroyed since the Taliban swept back into power in 2021.

Under the Taliban, women are banned from most employment, cannot access public parks or baths, and must cover their faces completely. When in public, they are forbidden from speaking and must be accompanied by a male guardian. Girls over 12 are banned from attending school. In December last year, one of the final authorised routes to higher education  – midwifery and nursing courses – was removed.

In our next online event, The Evidence’s editor Megan Clement will speak to Khadija Haidary, a journalist at the women-led, investigative newsroom Zan Times and supporter of a network of online and secret schools operating in Afghanistan.

The event will be held on Monday 15th December at 2 pm (Paris time, GMT+1). It will be in English and reserved for our subscribers.
